How to prepare for a presentation in English

Giving presentations can be nerve-wracking and become even more nerve-wracking when they’re not in your native language. However, there’s a few things that you can do to make presentations in English slightly less terrifying:

  1. Write a script – you don’t have to follow this script word-for-word, but it is extremely useful to have an idea of what you’re going to say at particular points of the presentation, which is where a script can come in handy. Instead of having to flip through sheets of A4, we recommend using flash cards that you can scan without anybody in the audience realising.
  2. Practise your pronunciation – English pronunciation is tricky, even more so when you’re in a stressful situation like a presentation. In the days before the presentation, practise by repeating the words and phrases you have trouble with, and the presentation will go a lot smoother!
  3. Engage with the audience – you don’t have to be an English expert to be able to smile at the audience, make constant eye contact, and be a confident speaker. Using gestures and facial expressions can be even more valuable in communication than having perfect grammar!
  4. Coordinate with others presenting with you – making sure that all of your team members are on the same page is extremely useful in the organisation of your presentation and can help in avoiding those awkward silences when nobody knows what to say.
